How does design for digital media differ from print media?
It’s fair to say that although the graphic and print industry has had to respond quite aggressively to the sudden exponential rise of digital media, both design for digital media and print media are learning to embrace each others differences and be happy occupying very different arenas. For print it’s always been about the tactile, sensory, hands-on experience involving the colours and textures, the finishes, even the smell of the ink on the paper! With design for digital media it’s a wholey different experience which, whilst still wanting to engage visually, aims to provide a journey through an information rich environment where almost anything seems possible. And it’s here where the similarities between print media and design for digital media end. Setting aside the aesthetics, designing mobile responsive, e-commerce websites requires additional understanding of how a site should be structured, how the content should be crafted in such a way as to engage the user but also the search engines (SEO)… really, it’s all very complicated!
